SOMERVILLE — The goal of the Womens Health and Counseling Center is to make its clients as good as new.
Thats why it may be appropriate that the nonprofits new second-hand store at 136 E. Main St. is named Good As New.
Fran Palm, the nonprofits executive director, said the idea for the store came from the agencys annual garage sales.
Shoppers would ask if we were going to be back next weekend, she said.
Because the agency, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2013, needed another revenue stream, the store seemed to be a natural outgrowth of the nonprofits already successful fundraiser, Palm said.
After researching second-hand shops that other nonprofits operate in other towns, the Womens Health and Counseling Center decided to open one in Somerville, where the agency is headquartered.
No other nonprofit organization operates a fundraising store in the borough, Palm said.
Were very pleased to be part of downtown Somerville, the executive director said, adding that the Main Street location could add to the agencys public exposure.
The store offers gently used furniture, clothing, shoes, household decorations, jewelry and childrens items.
Donations can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays, Palm said. Donors with larger items, such as living room or dining room sets, should call first to see if there is room in the store, Palm said.
The agency has developed a partnership with the local franchise of 1-800-GOT-JUNK, a national junk removal service, to accept some of the material it has collected, Palm said.
Place of business: 710 Freeburg,
Belleville, IL, 62220
Contact: 800-419-0211
The shop is staffed by six volunteers who are very selective about the merchandise the store accepts, the executive director said. Overall the nonprofit has about 150 volunteers.
The shop is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Shoppers can gain some creative and unique decorating ideas by going to Good As New, Palm said. For example, one volunteer bought several oil paintings at the store, had new frames put on them and decorated her home, she said.
People come here to look for treasurers, Palm said.
The Womens Health and Counseling Center, located at 71 Fourth St., provides access to health care for people who otherwise would not be able to obtain health care from traditional providers due to monetary, cultural, language or other barriers, Palm said. News:
Since its founding, the center has served more than 250,000 clients, Palm said. In 2011, the facility had 16,366 clients.
